Essas fotos foram feitas para uma reportagem da revista Terra sobre os índios Pataxós. Acabei me interessando por sua história, pesquisando e documentando mais profundamente. A maior parte desse povo vive hoje no sul do estado da Bahia. Provavelmente seus antepassados assistiram ao desembarque dos primeiros portugueses em terras tupiniquins. Como a maioria dos indígenas brasileiros, vivem em condições deploráveis, quase na miséria. Aos poucos estão superando o descaso das autoridades locais e federais e melhorando de vida.
Dos muitos massacres que sofreram, o mais marcante foi o caso de assassinato do índio Galdino, que foi queimado vivo por meninos ricos enquanto dormia em um ponto de ônibus em Brasília. Atualmente estão investindo no turismo como forma de desenvolvimento sustentável. Sua língua original, o patxôhã, que quase foi extinta está sendo estudada novamente nas suas escolas. Aos poucos vão resgatando as raízes de sua identidade indígena.
PATAXOS
These photos were taken for an article for a magazine about the Pataxos Indians. I became interested in their history, researching and documenting it more thoroughly. Most of these people live in the southern part of the state of Bahia. Their ancestors probably witnessed the landing of the first Portuguese on Brazilian soil. Like most indigenous Brazilian people, they live in deplorable conditions and are nearly destitute. They are slowly overcoming the indifference of the local and federal authorities and are improving their lives.
Of the many massacres that they have suffered, the most striking case was of the assassination of the Indian Galdino, who was burned alive by rich kids while sleeping at a bus stop in Brasilia. They are currently investing in tourism to create sustainable development. Their original language, the patxôhã, which almost became extinct is once again being studied in their schools. They are slowly recovering the roots of their indigenous identity.
